How do I get two different note heads?

I'm doing a ride pattern, where the right hand is laying out eighth notes on the rim (and 'X' notehead) and the left hand is playing a syncopated sixteenth note rhythm over the top on the drum head (a regular notehead). On the notes where the rhythm lines up, I tried hitting both keys simultaniously, which plays back correctly, however, Sibelius wants to notate both notes with an 'X' notehead. Is there a way to individually change noteheads on a 'per note' basis so I can have both noteheads on the same note?

Thanks for the help.
Okay, I found a solution. I just seperated the ride into two different voices. This will probably even work better for my kids.

Thanks anyway, though.
Keith - I've occasionally come across this problem as well. I think it's a Sibelius thing. When you enter in a "double stop" that should display with two different noteheads, it mistakenly enters the same notehead for both pitches. You can always select one, then change it, but with the large quantity of noteheads to select from (in the VDL mapping), it'll be some crazy guesswork to select the notehead which will accurately play back your intended sound.

You've already figured out the better solution, and I agree. This sort of part actually looks better when written in two voices.

Best regards,
I have some questions...I am a finale user but i am taking Jim's advice and making the switch to Sibelius..

1.how do you split the parts in one measures to show show and play two different things in Sibelius.... kind of like the measures in spice mon where the bass drums are doing different rhythms , one on top, one on bottom.

2.also, Jim, where did you get the "Z" to notate a buzz roll?

3. How do you insert measures?

4. in the 4th bar of "D" in spice mon, how did you make those egg beaters fit in? If they were normal sixteenth note 5 tuplets then there would be too many notes with that eighth note shot on the end of the Egg beaters.

5. Also, can the way a flam sounds be changed in Sibelius? it may be just my ears playing tricks on me, bt i think the flams in spice mon sound more closed than the default flams in the sibelius template.

any help would be much appreciated. like i said, i feel so dwindled down now that i have decided to use sibelius after using finale for over 4 years.

As mentioned earlier in this post, this is best done by splitting into voices. Voice 1 will have stems going up, layer 2 will have stems going down. The 1-2-3-4 buttons on the bottom of your keypad palette correspond to which voice you're entering. By default, layer one highlights in blue, and layer two highlights in green. More info on voices in your sibelius documentation.

Jim uses technique text for the buzz roll "Z". There is a symbol for this in the symbol window, but you have to align it perfectly with the stem for it to look very good.

Create Bar (ctrl-B will enter it at the end, or ctrl-shift-B will enter it next to the bar you have selected).
4. in the 4th bar of "D" in spice mon, how did you make those egg beaters fit in? If they were normal sixteenth note 5 tuplets then there would be too many notes with that eighth note shot on the end of the Egg beaters.
These types of tuplets are a little harder than most. Enter the first 16th note. Then go to the create menu, and select "tuplet". Enter 5:3 (five sixteenths in the space of three), and click the "ratio" button so it displays the ratio in the tuplet. Click OK, and enter the rest of your notes.

With most tuplets, you can simply enter the first note, then click ctrl-3 (for a triplet for example) to change it to a tuplet. Ctrl-5 would be a fivelet, etc.

As with any powerful software, it will take some time. It sounds like you're definitely on the right track. Learn those keyboard shortcuts, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you can go.

good luck,
