i have a midi yamaha keyboard and finale 2003, laptop (dell 512 MB and 60 GB) and VD1 of course.. soundcard (external.. ).. and i was wondering which midi cord should i choose or whats do u think would be the best bet on getting a Midi Cable?? please give me some input bc im am new to midi cables.. i have always just inputed notes into finale using the mouse but its becoming very tedious..
i need one that would hook up to my usb drive and to my keyboard??
please give input!!

Jeremy,

Any standard midi cable will work. You will need a midi interface to connect your keyboard to your laptop. There are several good usb midi interfaces available. If you only wish to enter notes then you'll only need 1 midi cable running between the interface and your yamaha keyboard. Connect the keyboard at the midi out port and the interface at the midi in port.

A second cable going keyboard midi in port to interface midi out port would allow you to hear the sounds stored in the keyboards banks. If you are using only the sounds loaded into your sound card the second cable is the optional connection. Think of it like this, you are sending information from the yamaha (midi out) to the interface (midi in). Then if you'd like, information comes from your computer (via the interface) as midi out to your yamaha (midi in).

The only other cable you would need is a usb cord to connect the interface to your laptop. Before you get the interface, if your sound card has midi ports then the interface might not be needed, your sound card would act as the interface, check the manual on this one. HTH.

will all of this come in a bundle?? like the cords?? .. i checked and i don't have a midi in and out on my external sound card... so what do i need... all i want to do.. is be able to play a note on the keyboard and a VD sample be written in finale... any specific ones ring a bell like brands.. or what should i search for bc i definetly want to make sure it will work b4 i get it... to u knwo save confusion... so please help asap and thanks ahead of time...

Before proceeding do the following: check to see if your computer is usb capable and has an available usb port. If it is NOT usb capable stop reading. If it is usb capable but you do not have an available port, purchase a usb hub (brand is not important).

If you are still reading, proceed.



Step #1: go to your local Sam Ash/Guitar Center/_____'s Music store

Step#2: tell the sales guy/gal you want to buy a Mark of the Unicorn Fastlane usb midi interface

Step#3: also tell them you need to buy 2 midi cables (brand is NOT important)

Step#4: pay for the above items

Step#5: read my previous post regarding how to connect midi cables to your keyboard, interface and computer.



This is not rocket science and information on how to put together a midi set up is in the Finale manual.

The folks at your local music store can help you learn all about this stuff. If you don't have a Guitar Center or Sam Ash nearby, call Sweetwater Sound. Their salespeople are very knowledgeable and courteous.

YES--it works. It's kinda like magic--ya ready? You plug the midi end of the cable into your midi keyboard and then you plug the USB end into your computer--then--BOOM!--It works! The only other thing you have to do is make sure FInale is set up to accept midi input. not my department--i use sibelius. Seriously--any of them will work--you are stressing way too much on midi cables!

and will all keyboards work?? .. i mean i have a yamaha PSR 140 that my parents bought like 2 years ago and it has the midi in and out on the back will this work? or will i have to pruchase another one??

Yes, that keybord will work. Unless you computer has a midi-in port , you will need to buy a USB to midi adpator like the one seen here:

will the Maudio UNO cord work ?? bc i can get that one for free from one of my friends.???.. he has one but never opened it.. i don't have a midi in on keyboard only USB.. and i could connect the usb and midi in and out to the keyboard?? will that work?? thanks ahead of time!!

Plug in the USB cable to the USB port on your keyboard, then plug it into an empty USB port on your computer and it is plugged in. If your keyboard requires a driver, you'll need to find that.

The way to find out if it needs a driver...if you plug it in and it works, you don't need one. If it doesn't work, you need one.

Does your yamaha keyboard have midi in/out?

Does your computer have a usb port?

Read the packaging for the Uno(?) cord. It will do what ever it says.

In all honesty Jeremy, this reads like you're trying to find the answers to questions that, if you took the time to read the manuals (yamaha, finale, vdl, computer), are right there in front of your eyes. If you bought the software legally, all of it (vdl and finale), you have the manuals and the answers.
