what is the best way to use the metronome samples in VD2?

I'm using sibelius and I was wondering what people think the easiest or best way to use the metronome is?

Should I create a 2nd snare line stave and hide it or is it better to hide it in another layer of the snare part?
If you load the ";metronome"; instrument into a VDL2 channel, you can set the ";Click"; slider (in the Sibelius MIXER window) to play on that channel. By doing so, you'll hear actual Dr. Beat sounds rather than the Sibelius woodblock.
Wow, I never even noticed the was a seperate instrument for metronome. I had only seen the met sounds in the snare voice

I guess you learn something new everyday.
Hello,

Is there a way to do the same thing on Finale 2005?

Regards,
Dan
In Finale, this is handled via the ";Click and Countoff"; window. You should see a button called ";click and countoff"; within the Playback window where you'll set the channel for your metronome, and the notes you want played for downbeats, and other beats.

If you've loaded the ";Snareline Full"; or ";Snareline Lite"; instruments, there are Dr.Beat metronome samples in the lower part of the instrument that you can draw click track sounds from without having to load a separate instrument.
How can the metronome be changed in Sibelius 5.1? I replaced the wooblock instrument that was assigned to the click track but I get no sound on the playback after I loaded the metronome instrument. I made sure I assigned to the same channel as the woodblock previously was. (In this instance channel 8)

Could it have something to do with the fact I have the snare drum voice in the music that also has a metronome sound? I've had help from Hugh with 2 sounds being triggered from different instruments causing a conflict but I don't have it written in the music anywhere.

The first (obvious) question would be to check the CLICK slot in your Sibelius mixer and make sure it's not muted.

A more long-term solution to do this (rather than swapping the met for the woodblock) is to have Sibelius automatically load the Metronome. To do this:

1) Go to preferences>playback, and make sure you've chosen to view by PROGRAM NAME rather than SOUND ID.
2) Make sure you're using at least one KP2 instance with the proper VDL sound set assigned.
3) In the mixer, go to the CLICK slot, and click the ";settings"; button.
4) Here, you can set which sounds to use for the ";accent"; and ";other beats"; on the click track. When you click the menus that pull down, you'll have to navigate a large list of all VDL instruments, looking for the METRONOME. It lists Dr. Beat sounds under the ";Metal"; caption where it defines ";accents"; or ";clicks";.

Again, make sure the click track isn't muted. Once you've made these settings, Sibelius should automatically load the metronome instrument rather than the Woodblock for your metronome needs.
That took care of it. Thanks Jim!
This should be pinned for a while.  What a simple but KICK ASS way to do this!!

Once you get to the end of number 4 (from quote above) you will see two sets of Dr. Beat listings. I would choose the second set (E5 and F5). This is to help Sibelius not be confused as to EXACTLY which patch is loaded into KontaktPlayer2.
Is there a good way to do this in finale 08?

I getting set up on a fresh install of Sibelius 5.2.5, with the 5.2.5 template. I searched for this thread and went to follow the quoted instructions. However, when I click on the button to change either of the metronome sounds (Step 4), only ";Sibelius Essentials"; is available as the first item in the menu. I am using a playback configuration comprising two instances of KP2 with the ";VDL Soundset 5.2.5"; Sound Set and one instance of KP2 with the Essentials Sound Set.

As an experiment, I changed one of my instances of KP2 to the ";Virtual Drumline 2.5"; Sound Set. When I view the Click settings after doing that, 6 options are available in the first level of the menu: ";Drum";, ";Wood";, ";Metal";, ";Rattle";, ";Wind";, and ";Exotic";. The menu does not start with a differentiation of VDL and Essentials sounds (as I believe it should), and beyond that looks different to what I recall (although I've only been through this selection process once or twice).

Anyway, it seems like there might be a problem with the 5.2.5 template and the mapping of the Click sounds.

Nope, nothing wrong with the Template. However, we may need to update the instructions. This worked for me:

1. Go to Preferences > Playback, and make sure you've chosen to view by PROGRAM NAME rather than SOUND ID.

2. Assign VDL SoundSet 5.2.5 to ALL instances of KP2 in your playback configuration. (You can change 'em back later.)

3. Click on a note or hit Play to load sounds and more-so to get the Program Names to show up.

4. In the mixer, go to the CLICK slot, and click the ";settings"; button.

5. Here, you can set which sounds to use for the ";accent"; and ";other beats"; on the click track. When you click the menus that pull down, you'll have to navigate a large list of all VDL instruments, looking for the METRONOME. 6. Once you've selected the sounds you want, click OK.

7. Immediately switch to a different playback configuration. Or if you have 2 or more KP2s activated, change the sound set assignment for one of them - save the configuration. (We are forcing Sibelius to reload everything.)

8. Hit Play. ... (the reloading part) ... Now check to see if the Dr. Beat Program Names stuck in the click track settings dialog box.

I tried several different things to make it work and the step that seemed to be the deciding factor as to whether it did or not, was number 7. Oh, and number 2 will insure that the sound set we want will show up where it needs to.

Let us know if that doesn't get the job done for you.

Hugh
Thanks, Hugh. Things look a little different on my end (e.g. instead of seeing ";Dr. Beat Accents"; I see the actual SoundID, which is very long). Nonetheless, this makes things work. Of course one needs to have the VDL Soundset 5.2.5 loaded in order to hear the proper metronome sounds, but that makes sense. I imagine that was the case all along, but I never discovered in until now. If I enable the click with only Essentials loaded, I just get a high-pitched dinging sound.

It's nice to have my Dr. Beat back. Thanks.
