Is there any way that I can use a stripped down sound set to use less memory?  I just want to write some simple cadences and I don't need the compicated sound sets that take a gig of memory. 

Yes. Instead of loading ";Snareline Full";, load the instrument named ";Snareline LITE"; (and so-on for the other instruments). You should be able to do simple cadence stuff quite well like this. There's more information about lite instruments in the VDL2 User Manual.
