Flams with VDL2 and Finale 2006

Good afternoon all!

I am sitting in my office waiting the five hours for our pre-game
activities here in Tuscaloosa:-).  I have begun writing our second
show using Finale 2006 and VDL2 to make good use of my
time.  My flams are not playing back correctly. I changed the
duration of the grace notes to 64 and then to 32, but still no luck.
When I play the parts back, the flams are interpreted as
individual notes/beats and they are not playing back
as a flam.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I also
reduced the grace-note fofset on entry.  I made
my changes in the Document Options dialog box.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Hey Neal,

Define individual...
It's not too late to turn away from the darkside and get Sibelius instead... then all you have to do is drag the grace note side to side to adjust the sound.  :)

Anyways, I think what you might be doing is entering a slur and not a grace note.  You might want to check www.finaleforum.com for non-VDL2 issues about notation entry.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for your help! ";Individual";: poor word choice.
I am not hearing flams.  And, I am not entering slurs
I don't believe.  I enter an eighth note (in speedy entry), for example,
and then hit the semi-colon key.  Then I enter another
eigth note. When I played that back in Finale 2004
and VDL1 with the adjusted grace note duration, it sounded
like a flam.  Hope what I have offered will better help you
help me fix the problem.  Thank you again for your assistance!

Take care!
Neal
Quick question Neal,

When you hit the semi-colon key does the first eighth note change to a grace note size?

In FIN2005-Mac, the key combo is option-G to change an entered note value into a grace note.

Neal,

I've been using a value of 64 for most of my music (depending on tempo) for grace notes. It seems that if you were writing anything over 152 and using a value of 32, you might end up with re-trigger issues. That is really close together. Do they sound at all at other levels (ie >128)?

Good afternoon!

I called Finale.  The gentleman I spoke with recommended
changing the playback style to MARCHING BAND.  That seemed
to help out greatly.  I also tried it with no playback style
and that worked as well.  When I enter my notes, I
hit the semi-colon and they do turn into a grace note.
That might be another area to explore in terms of
getting an appropriate playback for flams.  Thank you
ALL for your help!

Jim:  we should have a get-together for all of the
Tapspace forum users at PASIC.  Maybe we could
share problems, ask questions, etc.  What does
everyone think?

Have a great day and thank you again everyone!

I think that is a great idea. Considering PASIC is in my own backyard, I wouldn't miss it for the world. I think a Virtual Drumline 2 ";User Conference"; would be a cool idea to get a chance to meet and discuss with all the people here.
I'll be at PASIC at the Tapspace booth so I'm down with that.  I can offer a testers perspective and help out anyone that wants to learn how to set up their own templates.

Jim,

It looks like we're on to something.

Ciao,
Neal
I'm also planning on attending PASIC, living in Cincinnati makes it a no brainer.

Hey guys - this is a great idea! I'll contact a few of you and look into the possibilities of putting together some sort of little VDL2 summit/get together.

thanks!
