I'm a composer using Finale 2006 with an integrated Kontakt player with the Garritan Personal Orchestra library... up until now I haven't really cared what the MIDI versions of my pieces have sounded like but I'm getting more and more demand for good MIDI versions of my music. I'm really impressed with the wind and string sounds in GPO but the percussion sounds aren't really cutting it...not enough variation. So my question is this: Would it be possible to load GPO into one instance of Kontakt and load VDL2 into another? I would VDL to play all the percussion and GPO for everything else. I can export an audio version right from Finale so this would be very convenient. Also would I have to upgrade Kontakt player? As far as I know the Finale version isn't a full one...

The GPO Kontakt Player with Finale is for loading only the GPO sounds. The AU/VST support now built into Finale will allow you to load the GPO player, the VDL player as well as any other Native Instrument player.

Ted is right.
Finale GPO is a NI Kontakt Player VDL2 is also a NI Kontakt Player
Each of these Kontakt Player devices will play the sounds that they come with, but won't allow other sounds to be loaded. Since both are NI players, they are compatible to be hosted directly within Finale 2006.
KONTAKT is the full flagship sampler created by Native Instruments. It is capable of loading instruments that come with GPO or VDL2. So you have a couple options...
In Finale, load wind/orchestral sounds into the Finale GPO player (finale channels 1-16), then load an instance of VDL2 that would playback your percussion sounds (finale channels 17-32).
OR - Upgrade to the FULL version of KONTAKT (which will allow all 16 channels to be utilized), and simply load your GPO and VDL2 instruments into Kontakt. Keep in mind, using Kontakt can be a little more ";techie";, so if that's a concern, option 1 would be the simplest (and least expensive) route.

Something else to be aware of is that you can have more than 1 instance of a Kontakt player within Finale 2006 for a total of 126 midi channels.

Hello all!
Do I gather from the quote taken from Jim's post that we now have an option through Finale 2006 using GPO and VLD2 to play back both wind and battery sounds in the same arrangement? Or would it be easier to just go and purchase Sibelius:-)!
Have a great weekend! Neal

That's correct. Finale 2006 comes with a basic NI GPO player just like the VDL2 player. It has the same 8 channel limitation, but this per player. You can load multiple instances of ANY NI device including full versions of Kontakt. The maximum number of MIDI channels is 128 when using the NI audio units for Finale playback. Like VDL2, the Finale GPO is a closed system meaning you cannot add any instruments to the exsisting set and they did not include saxophone in the set. You can however, load any of the GPO instruments into Kontakt. There are also some bugs with making audio files directly from your Finale score as well as saving a midi file when using the NI players.

I was happy to see when Finale 2006a (maintenance release) integrated ";save as audio file"; support for files that playback with NI players. Is this not quite working yet?

For some people this works for others it has not, even after reinstalling the update. I have had no luck in getting it to work correctly with the NI players. When it has worked for others your finale file should playback the entire file as it saves the audio. On the plus side, if it does work you have your choice of wav or aiff format which could then be imported into iTunes and then into an mp3. One other down side to Finale for Mac at the moment is speed. it can be very slow to start, screen redraws on less than high end machines can create lags. There are a lot of unhappy Mac people on the Finale forums. You also do not have the capability to use both the NI AU players with the built-in softsynth or either with a hardware sound module. Personally, I'm not real happy with 06 so I still have 05 loaded on my laptop.
