New Demo - KATRATERRA

I wrote this piece a few years ago, but thanks to the assistance of Bill Castillo (who helped input the notes), and a lot of my own tweaking in Logic, I finally have a decent recording of ";Katraterra"; being played strictly by VDL2 (except log drums). This piece will be available from Tapspace soon.

I hope you enjoy!
One word...

Jammin'
Jim,

Did you write this for anyone specifically or just as an ensemble?  It is VERY cool!!!
Thanks guys!

Dave, this was originally written for the Seguin HS percussion ensemble (Seguin, TX) who premiered it at the BOA concert festival in Indy in 2003.

That is cool.  We just performed at that festival a few weeks ago.  The Wind Ensemble was the ";invited"; ensemble but we added on the percussion ensemble.  It was a VERY cool time!

This recording sounds great!!!! Supurb job!
How much time was spent in Sibelius versus time spent in Logic?

I openly admit to not being too bright, am I wasting my time trying to do EVERYTHING in Sibelius for a publishable recording (if publishable is a word)?

Yes.

You can get some OK sounds out of notation software, but the software is not designed to make that kind of recording and it will take you a lot longer to do.

Check out Reaper.
Ditto.  If audio output is a goal, notation isn't your program.  Notation programs are a sketch, and should be treated as such.  Sketches can be nice, but they are not any more than that.
Very, very nice, Jim!!  I can't wait until that is available.  I want my kids to play that!  Key word there is ";WANT";  LOL

Great mix of sounds and feels making t he small things sound real too.
Is there a Mac equivalent to Reaper out there?
Thanks TylerDurden, I guess I just needed to look a little harder!

Have some karma for your troubles:)

No problem!

I'm still working on getting a full template up for Reaper, so you can open it and have all of the routing automatically set for VDL with common instruments.
That will be awesome, thanks.

I'm not quite ready to dive into this next venture just yet, that template will certainly make it easier!

By the way, ";Katraterra"; is a current Tapspace offering. More info at:

It was also just featured today at PASIC in the new literature concert performed by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They did a great job with it and it was humbling to see it being performed in the large venue.

I don't remember how much time was spent in Logic compared to Sibelius. I wrote it all in Sibelius, so i know i spent a good deal more time there. Still, working on details of the recording can be time consuming depending how authentic you're wanting to lean.
