is there any way to just have the battery instruments....or do i always have to write with the full score....

Consult your Sibelius documentation regarding ";deleting staves.";  Once you create the template you desire make ure you ";save as"; and just open your new battery template instead of the one supplied by Tapspace.  It is very important that you start with the VDL:2 template.
