OT: Buddy's Bolero

Maybe we should start an ";off topic board."; :) Can't resist...this is great.

I think an off topic board would be cool.

This vid of Buddy is great!  I wonder what year it is from.  I have listened to him and his band play that chart tons of times but never ";seen"; it performed.  VERY cool stuff!

Thanks Jim!
You can sense the disdain that the players have for Buddy.  The woodwind guys didn't even want to joke around or smile with him.  From the stories I have heard, Buddy had a great band but treated his players horribly.
I have heard that as well.  The sax/flute guys that came up to start/end sure did seem pretty un-comfortable didn't they?

you do have to admit that old Buddy was playing some pretty sweet beats during the tune though...

For anyone who's heard the famous Buddy bootlegs, it's not surprising that there may be some visible tension with the players. It seems apparent even in this old video. If I were a flute player, I wouldn't appreciate a drummer rapping on my flute and jabbing me with his sticks for laughs in front of the audience. But damn...when he plays...
Apparently, the user took that video off of Youtube!
I wonder why the guy took it down?!  That is pretty weird....
If you haven't read it, get ";Traps the Drum Wonder.";

http://www.amazon.com/Traps-Drum-Wonder-Buddy-Rich/dp/1888408022

Buddy made his living solely from playing the drums. He started as a child on the Vaudeville circuit. The quotes and stories are endless in this book. . .

When he was in his last days and had the first of many serious convulsion attacks due to the tumor; the nurses were frantically wheeling him into the operating room that very well could've been his death bed, as they were beginning to put him under, the nurse understandably serious asked Buddy if there was anything he was allergic to. With his typical smirk he cracked ";Yeah! Country & Western!";

Suprisingly, there is also a complete chapter dedicated to those bootleg tapes also.
I agree - GREAT book!
The guys in the band were uptight because they were probably afraid of being dropped off in the middle of no where. (or so the lengend says) I love this clip! Touch, taste and showmanship come out of Buddy like butter. how many people do you know can play a single drum and keep the musically ignorant captivated while wowing the rudimentally educated? He was one of a kind! Thanks for the share Jim. Oh and an off topic board sounds great.
