Kontakt 2 + VDL 2/2.5

My question hopefully is simple.

I have upgraded my c-drive to 2gb ram.  Will that be enough memory to ";effectively"; run kontakt 2 (which I am purchasing this week) along with the vdl 2.5 update (when it becomes available) and Sibelius 4?

Also, with the new vdl update, should I be able to load it into the kontakt player as described in one of the tutorials?  Thanks

Jeremy
Jeremy,

Yes, 2 gigs will be enough memory for you.  If your scores get too dense though, you may have some hiccups.  When you get it all up and running, try tinkering with the latency to really get it all dialed in.

The last question confuses me.  What are you trying to do?
No one has answered (last I checked) if vdl 2.5 will be able to load more than 1 instrument per channel to playback.  (i.e. marimba, snare drum, crash cymbals, for 1 player to have the playback).  I wasn't for sure if vdl 2.5 would be able to load into the kontakt 2 engine as it does for vdl 2.

Jeremy

AT work, may be vague, gotta go
Bill,

It is my understanding that in Kontakt 2, you can load more than 1 instrument to playback per channel, I think the term is bank (I think you have to send midi messages to change instruments for the appropriate imput and playback). So for example I can load the vdl sounds and have one stave playback the marimba, snare drum, and crash cymbals. (not simultaniously of course, but one player can maneuver between instruments)

Since vdl 2.5 will now be using the Kontakt 2 engine, can vdl 2.5 perform the same function for more than 1 instrument per channel to play back form a single stave of music? If not, by loading kontakt 2, can I still load the vdl 2.5 sounds into the kontakt 2 player?

Let me reiterrate that my computer knowlegde (quite frankly) sucks at best. I'm also getting ready to purchase kontakt 2 and when the vdl 2.5 update is available will pay to have the new disc. Basically, I just want to know if I can write for a multi-percussion set up (with the appropriate sounds in vdl 2) and have it playback accordingly. Will I have to use kontakt 2 to do that or will vdl 2.5 do it by itself?

I hope this helps address my last question. Thanks

Jeremy
Jeremy,

Bank functionality in Kontakt Player 2 (which is what VDL 2.5 will come with) is in its early stages. We're working with NI to ensure this happens, but can't officially say it will be supported just yet. But likelihood is high.

How this bank support fits into your workflow may differ depending on what you are doing. But the likely good news is that by the time VDL 2.5 is shipping, bank support will be included.

Hope this helps clear things up, and my apologies if this topic has been a little vague thus far.
Thanks for the lightening quick response.

As a poor college student interested in doing more then just marching percussion arranging, would buying kontakt 2 be a good investment to get and to use for the banking purposes as well?  Is there a kontakt 3 coming soon that I should wait for instead?  Especially until vdl 2.5 ships with it's high likelihood of bank functionality.

Jeremy
I don't know anything about a Kontakt 3 being on the horizon. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. Kontakt 2 ships with a 15GB library of great sounds, that are worth the price alone. That would be another great reason to purchase Kontakt. Plus, it's fully compatible with VDL 2.5, so you could (in theory) use Kontakt's orchestral sounds (from the Vienna Symphonic Library) right along side your VDL air raid siren. What more could you ask for!? ;)
SOLD!

Thanks for all the help.  This is the most user friendly site.  My first work will be for Solo Air Raid Siren w/ oboe accomp.  :)

Thanks again.

Dave, you're just saying that because you wished you had thought of it!
I still think Ancona's Anklung concerto will trump all.
Ratliff,

You're not feeling it?  I could make a tape to play along, amp the oboe, it will be ";Broken Drum";esque.  I could make the oboe ";explore"; its sound possibililties during the decay of the air raid siren, program the tape to have sounds of explosions or shrill sustained sounds.  Do you see my vision now?  :)

Or we could just set the oboe on fire and have the air raid sound play from a laptop at a bonfire or something.  Whichever is more enjoyable.
you boys are KILLIN me!!!!!
You know, it could be fun to do the ";worst ten seconds"; of VDL as a competition...
