Sibelius 5 annouced

MAN - this looks great!
Alright, perhaps I'm having a retarded day but I'm running K2 in standalone mode and the Sib. 5 demo.  I pulled up the Sib4 vdl2 template and it loads fine.  What I can't figure out is how to assign channels.  It's not in the mixer.

How do I do this Jim?

Isn't it a sign that the world is about to end when Bill has to ask questions on this forum?!?

Excuse me, I'm going to stock up on bottled water and canned foods...

Give me about another day and I'll be able to tell you everything there is to know about this program.  So far, this is the only thing that has stumped me and I'm fairly sure it's because I'm overthinking the problem

I have no doubt Bill!  You da man!!!
I have been having the same issue in which I can load VDL as a VST plug-in,but cannot get the correct instruments to output. It seems that Sibelius 5 has gone away with user defined channels, and instead is designed to automatically load the correct instrument from the sound set chosen (Kontakt, GPO, VDL). I posted a question about this on the Sibelius website and this was my reply:

";We're working on a sound set file for VDL 2.5, the update that works with Kontakt Player 2, and it will be included with the full Sibelius 5 package. Once you have the sound set chosen, Sibelius is able to load automatically the sounds that you need for your score.";

So it looks like the full version will be up and running. I can't wait to try it out. Hope this helps.

David
As always, congrats Jim on the exposure VDL is getting with Sibelius 5.

One question to those who have had time to tinker with the demo--is it worth it?  I have to say, given the time between 3 and 4, this upgrade to Sibelius 5 took me a little by surprise.

I purchased 4 pretty much solely for the embedded parts feature, which has been an utter godsend (especially on full-band scores which were a nightmare to manage in the days of export parts).  Looking at 5, the panorama change is a welcome interface improvement, but on the whole I guess I'm a little underwhelmed.  The native support of libraries is of course a great feature, but I'm perfectly content hosting VDL2.5 natively or in Kontakt and not having to deal with the hassle of bottled-up plug-ins.

The upgrade price isn't too bad (I think $170ish), especially given how much use it gets in my dock, but there really weren't a lot of productivity improvements described in the features list--which would be a more compelling reason to upgrade.  So what are people's preliminary thoughts?

(or perhaps Jim being a little more intimately-involved in the packaging will know more about what 5 has to offer)
The best source for all the various new features in the software will most definitely be the folks at Sibelius. Obviously, using the demo version is a great way to gauge if you want to do the upgrade. Though I'm sure there will be a likely host of various other changes making their way into the software before it's officially shipping. I think there are two schools of thought on software update releases. Some prefer that yearly upgrade so things seem new and fresh all the time, while others don't mind a major upgrade every couple years, assuming there's significant features in the update to warrant it.

I think you'll find that while perhaps the interface has a similar feel throughout, Sibelius 5 is a pretty massive upgrade with the overall redesign of the playback system, soundworld, and VI hosting. Heck, the new bar numbering changes are actually worth the price of admission. I also think many people will find working in plug-in mode with VDL will become a huge time-saver in launching projects and rendering audio files, but not everyone's workflow is the same, and there's no doubt that using their prior version with VDL is quite effective as well.

Thanks for the info Jim.  Do you know the anticipated release date for the upgrade?

Check with Sibelius. Last I recall seeing from their official announcements said by the end of June.
Wow you're right about the measure numbering.  Almost worth it just for that :P
