I've been using VDL:2 for a few months now, and I've decided to switch from Finale to Sibelius. I've also been making little upgrades to my computer. And so this got me thinking about soundcards. My PC currently has the standard SoundMAX Digital Audio card. So my question is what would a better soundcard do for my computer? Also, what would be some good ones to look at. I've heard about ASIO and some other stuff, but I don't really know anything about them. Any advice would be great!
I found these by just typing in soundcard into the search box in the FAQ section and also here in the forum. I bet one of these will get you started to answering your question.
Take Care,
L

Thanks for the links. I had run a search on soundcards, but I didn't have much luck. I'm really new to this stuff, so I'm going to need a more dumbed down explanation. I looked at both of the links, but everytime there was a picture of a soundcard, each card I saw looked wildly different from the other. They also talked about audio interfaces. Are those the same things?

John,
Assuming you have a tower PC with typical PCI expansion slots, check out this soundcard for a good, low-cost way to upgrade your current one.

There are basically two types of pro audio ";soundcards";. They can either be internal (PCI), or external. The external ones are more commonly called audio interfaces, and aside from extra features, they do basically the same task as a PCI card but connect through either firewire or USB.
If you have no need for preamps or any extra features, an internal card like the M-Audio Audiophile series (like Jim posted) might work out well for you.
The M-Audio Transit might be a good cheap option as well, especially if you use a notebook as well-
