I've installed the .sib template and all updates from ";sound sets"; off of sibelius site. Still having some serious issues with accurate input and playback of battery sounds. I am only using sound essentials vdl sounds at this time. Seems like there were some early issues with this so maybe I just have .xml's in the wrong folder or something although I followed download advice creating a ";sounds"; folder in my .sib 5 applications. Some sounds are ok, others are screwy both in Kontakt keyboard triggers and .sib staves. Any advice?

Have you updated to Sibelius 5.1? I suspect that most of your issues will be solved with that one update.

ablemusic - the success of your ";Essentials"; playback may depend on what noteheads and staff space/line you've written notes on. As I understand it, the Marching Snareline, Marching Tenorline, etc. instruments that are part of Sibelius's default instruments, are not setup so that you have to ";input using pitch xx"; on your MIDI keyboard. You could customize those instruments, however I think Sibelius's intent is to have you write the percussion parts by clicking on the staff with the mouse, and using notehead assignments, and staff placement to determine which sounds you get from the loaded patch.
To view these mappings in their default state, select them in the ";edit instruments"; window, then click the ";staff type"; button to see how the various percussion sounds have been assigned.
