I'm really failing the Mod-Wheel test.  When in the tenor voice using 16th notes, I want drum on counts 1; E; shot on + (and); drum on ";uh";.  When following the key map, the sound on entry gives me the ";shot"; but on playback, I get the drum sound.  I've been trying to absorb the Mod-Wheel text in the VDL 2.5/Sibelius 5.1 instruction, but I'm missing something significant or I'd be getting the shot in playback.

Suggestions?

If I am reading you correctly, the entry in question looks something like this? (minus the notehead numbers):

If you are trying to use Staff Text for the [b]shot/dread/rod/rim[/b] sounds you are going to be disappointed in the results. The Template has been setup to not use staff text for these sounds. The only thing you have to do is [b]use the correct noteheads[/b]. Definitely take another look at the tutorial video Jim made that covers Noteheads - the last screencast on the tutorials webpage.

Now, if you are in fact doing all of that right, and still not getting the results you want, then there must be some other problem going on. And this is the time that I will ask for more details of what you're trying.

Hugh, thanks for your response.�� I had previously tried to look at the tutorials but was unsuccessful.�� So after your suggestion, I gave it another shot, failed, and decided to download Quick Time again.�� That did it, turns out I did not have the latest version.�� Now, what I discovered was this; I was partially successful applying what I'd learned in the Notehead tutorial.�� After some success and failures with some of the noteheads, I had yet another thought.�� I was working in an imported score (my partner has Sibelius 4 and hasn't used VDL yet).�� I had loaded up VDL 2.5 soundset for use in an imported score as the directions instruct you to do.�� But when looking at the noteheads on that imported score, it shows there are only 35 notehead available.�� So, I opened the 2.5 template and after loading the snare voice I again looked at the notehead options.�� 63 noteheads are available with the 2.5 template (yeah, I know you know that).

Did I do something wrong when I loaded up the 2.5 sound sets into the Sibelius 4 score?�� Or is it that to get all of the mapping offered in 2.5, you have to use 5.1/2.5 combo?

Again, thanks for the education.�� I'm getting better at using the tools.

Ah! I see what's going on now.

The problem is that you are importing into a Sibelius 4 score. Not so much that you did that wrong, but that the 5.1 Template is designed for ";new projects moving forward";. [b]The list if noteheads from version 4 to 5 are very different[/b] - and this is why people are having a difficult time ";upgrading"; their older scores. (There are actually 64 noteheads defined in the Template:�� numbers 0 thru 63. :)) More on that in a second.

If your partner is not using VDL and has just horn parts and such, then it might just be better to [b]copy and paste[/b] those parts into a somewhat matching copy of the 5.1 Template. The main thing you want to avoid at this point is importing a House Style in either direction - the noteheads list will get jacked up whichever way you go. (Uhh, I hope that makes sense.)

Now, for those who have Sib 4 VDL scores that want to import into 5.1, there is still hope. In a few days I plan to have a link to what Jim has referred to as the ";CLASSIC"; template (his efforts). This will be a beta file, but will otherwise be useful.

The critical message here is to avoid importing the House Style.  Okay, I hosed it up on this one but am primed for the future!!

One question for you.  I saved the VDL 2.5/5.1 template as a Sibelius 4 file for my partner to use in the future.  When he opens it and loads instruments etc., will it make it easier for me if he uses it?  Or will saving it as a Sib 4 file negate all of the cool tools that had been previously loaded?

PS  0-63 is 64!  I forgot to count 0 as a notehead.  DOH!!

That might just work. I hadn't thought of that, and I would be curious to know how it turns out. Let me know.

If it doesn't work, then you may have to stick with the copy and paste idea.

One more thing, how long before your partner upgrades to 5.1? You may have to put a bone in his ear. ;)

Hugh, I'll let you know how I make out with the template experiment!

I don't know about the conversion for my partner.�� I busted on him at last Thursday's rehearsal about moving to Sib 5/5.1 AND VDL 2.5 but only got a smile in return.�� I'm the one that convinced him that Sibelius was the way to go!�� He was a long time Finale user before that but we had conversion problems.�� Now that he uses Sibelius, he's glad he switched though he still uses Finale for some others.

I haven't gotten him broken in on VDL.�� He has 2.0 but like many of us had trouble getting it running and kind of backed away in that it wasn't urgent to use it.�� Now I'm trying to get him not only use it but to upgrade to 2.5.�� I haven't won that one yet.

In any case, I proudly wear my VDL white color and praise it to any who takes the time to listen!��

As I said, I'll get my partner to experiment with something and let you know how we make out!

Hugh, I still have Sibelius 4 operable on my PC.  I was one of those guys that leaded into 5 before it or I was ready and had to engage Sibelius to help me out by giving me coding to make 4 work.

So, I took the 5.1 template, saved it as a 4 file; opened it in 4, entered some instruments and notes; saved and closed it.  Then I went back to 5.1, opened that file, selected the ";OK"; option when it warned me about the older version stuff (properly ignoring the ";House Styles";).  When it opened, I checked the note heads and voila!!!  All 64 appeared so it DOES work to save the 5.1 template to an older version.

That's excellent Steve! It sounds like you have things to where you and your partner can get some work done now. Good good!
