Has anyone created Drum Maps for VDL 2.5 for Sonar? It would save me a lot of time if such items are already in existence. If worse comes to worse I can try to create them on my own but it is quite time consuming and really taxing on my visually impaired eyes. Thanks.
I can think of only one person on this forum who uses Sonar, and it's for the final mix and not notation.

Okay, I'm beginning to realize that the majority of people who use VDL are using it within a notation program such as Finale or Sibelius. I can see how that would work quite well.
However, I bought VDL as a supplement to the Garritan Concert and Marching Band library and I do almost all of my work from within Sonar working with Midi and then later bouncing to audio. Garritan's C&MB library includes a subset of VDL 2 as the percussion section for the library. I would really like to dialogue with anyone using VDL from within a sequencing program rather than a notation program.
Thanks. Replies would be appreciated within this thread, a new thread, or pm or offline.

Jaybee - I frequently use VDL in Logic Pro which is essentially quite similar to Sonar. I know there are some methods to getting the percussion mapping to appear correctly using Logic's notation, but to be honest, I'm too stubborn (or busy) to take the time to learn how to make it work to its fullest capabilities. Percussion mapping can be a complex area that takes extra attention to master. So far, I have yet to gain that attention and won't be able to provide you with much guidance at this point, but if you do learn anything along the way (or if anyone else with more experience can chime in), I'm sure it would be a very helpful resource to help promote this topic. For many, I think this is something of the ";holy grail"; of their notation/sequencing workflow.

So let me ask a dumb question, since I'd need this background to speak intelligently...
Do you intend to use Sonar to achieve a notated output (paper product), or are you intending to use Sonar to compose via its midi editor? I've used Sonar to render projects. Essentially, it was my rendering engine when Sibelius didn't offer export. I've moved on, and I'm working solely in Cubase now, notation and all. I can say with utter certainty that the notation offered in Sonar won't get you very far. To give you an idea, you can't have a rest with one of a set of triplet notes. So if you ever have a triplet with note-rest-note, forget it. Their notation function can't handle it. That's just one example.
I would have upgraded because I like Sonar, but when it comes down to it, I want more control than notation programs offer of their midi, I want notation that works, and I want to work in Windows. That leaves me with only Cubase.
So having used Sonar, Cubase, Finale, and Sibelius, all to some extent to drive VDL... give it a shot. What do you want to know? There is no drum map AFAIK for Sonar because no one I have ever heard of here uses Sonar outside of Rendering/Post work on the audio. I'm working on one for Cubase currently, and in reality, it's (for now) going to be good enough to get me by personally on a project. Ask away...

I do not use Sonar for it's notation because, as you pointed out, that is the weak part of Sonar. However, I do use Sonar exclusively for Midi and audio and I have not found it to be lacking in that area. Now, granted, my needs may not be the same as yours as I don't need a printed result. I produce audio files as my finished product. I've used Sonar since S4PE and am now on Sonar 7PE. My use for VDL is not as a primary VST but as a supplement to my Garritan libraries, especially the Concert and Marching Band library. Garritan incorporates a small segment of VDL within that library for the percussion but I wanted to have the full VDL available for use with C/MB.
If I DO need a printed score than I use Finale but those times are rare as I'm not writing for an actual group to perform my writing. My works are either original works or adaptations and arrangements of existing works. And, yes, I do follow the copyright laws (before anyone asks.)
I was just hoping someone had already done the heavy lifting in regards to drum maps because I have deteriorating visual problems. Alas, I guess I'm going to have to tackle this job myself.

Jerry, I wonder... when you say maps, generally around here we talk about maps in such a way that changes the notation. Are you talking about just simple labels within the drum module of Sonar? Again, I haven't heard of them being done, but if that's what you're talking about, it may not be terribly difficult to do at least.
