LITE Instruments

Is there a FAQ somewhere that lists exactly what is removed from all the LITE instruments? I figured it was just lower quality sound files for the samples until I noticed that BassLine LITE only had 5 basses.

I can't imagine what could be taken out on the keyboard instruments.
You won't really notice anything ";missing"; per se. These instruments are LITE because they have a lower number of samples used for velocity sensitivity. This doesn't mean you won't hear the volumes change in accordance with your velocities. It just means there's less sample data in the LITE instruments which should help maintain a better workflow on your system. So essentially, the LITES are exactly the same (mapping wise) in regard to the sounds available to write with.

Some write with the LITES but then when it comes time to make a more detailed recording, replace them with the FULL instruments. To the average listener these differences may be negligible, so I wouldn't worry too much about losing out on tons of quality if you're writing with the lite instruments.

Well, imagine a keyboard bar...  middle C, just as an example.  The full instrument would have been created such that the bar was recorded 8-10 times depending on volume.  Each of these is played back based upon the velocity (";volume";) of the triggering midi event.  In other words, if you write a middle C at forte, VDL goes to get you the forte middle C note, and plays it at a loud-ish level.  The next note may be fortissimo, and VDL would get you a *different* fortissimo sound, played back at fortissimo.  That's why it sounds so real.

In a lite version, there might be 2 samples instead of 8-10.  This means that if you have two notes, a forte and fortissimo, you'll have VDL give you back the *same* sound, with the forte being forte, and the fortissimo a little louder, but the same sound sample.

If you record a bar at 10 different heights, with 10 different sounds, you get the best playback.  If you use only two of those ten, and ";stretch"; them out to be the same note, it still sounds pretty good, but less realistic.  The difference is that you might only have to load a much smaller instrument.  It's not easy to tell the difference, but overall the full instruments make for the best quality definitively.  If you're sketching out your ideas, a lite instrument will help some computers run faster than if they were burdened with a full version.

As Jim said, the mapping is the same.  All that changes is how many different samples in each note get loaded in.
Hmm...very interesting. If I'd been designing the software I probably would've just used lower bitrate samples to create LITE instruments. Very clever; nice work!

Well I just double-checked myself, there's definitely no 6th bass in BassLine LITE.

That's not a complaint, I have the horsepower to use the regular instruments. I only mention it in case it's a bug or accidental omission. Tryin' to be useful :)
There are indeed 6 basses on the Bassline Manual Lite (MW KS) instrument.  I just loaded it and found all six drums.  I actually use the lite instruments while I'm writing as it's a bit faster load time and I'm impatient like that.

Are you sure you weren't loading the Bassline VDL1 (MW) instrument by mistake?
i don' t know if its because I'm using sibelius 3, but when i use Snareline lite, i have to move the note heads from a on the staff to e to get a snare sound. whats the deal ?
No, Bill, I'm definitely loading BassLine Manual LITE. I've checked it a bunch of times to make sure I'm not crazy.

I have the latest versions of Sibelius, VDL, and the template. Very strange.
Can you post a screen shot?  Something showing the blue-tinted keyboard keys within Kontakt Player?

Move this to a new thread, and add a LOT more detail...  then we can help more quickly.
new thread as in new topic ?

also.... how do i put in screen shots? i know how to take the shot, but i don't know how to put it on the forum

Just email me the screenshot -- mat@cityofrain.com -- I'll post it as necessary.
