Finale 2008 and VD 2.5.1, template problem?

I just bought VD 2.5 and i just finished installing it. I downloaded the update and followed the directions. I use Finale 2008. IT WORKS! yay! but one set back. From the template that i used off of the updates site, the notes are wrong. I have only tried on the snares, tenors, and basses. Example, i try to put a note in on the snare line, but i get a rim click, and i have to hit the + button a couple times until i find the snare sound/note. Im not very familiar with finale, but i tried searching online, and i see no one has had this problem. If so i mustve missed it. Im guessing it has something to do with the percussion mapping but does anyone know how i can fix this problem. So when i write i dont have to hit the + button for every note?
A couple of things come to mind...

1. The percussion map may be corrupted. Edit each percussion map and under the Notes to Use for ";Staff Name";, select None (Clear), followed by All Named Notes. Verify you have an asterisk besides the midi patch number on the left hand column for each named note. The orther thing to check in the percussion map is that each ";named note"; in the map has the correct number assigned in 2nd column (Playback). I have seen multiple cases where Finale resets this to 0. This number should be the same as the patch number.

2. In finale, it is easier to input the correct note via midi keyboard. I personally don't do this but many folk follow this workflow. I always create a temporary staff in concert pitch and input the correct notes manually then copy to the percussion staff. This is a bit of a workflow nightmare but it works for me and I am not hindered by the slower workflow. Obviously I delete this staff once I am done.
hmmm, i dont think the file is corrupted. im not sure what to look for though. Is there a way to set which note is placed on the sheet? because rite now, when you click on the 7 line, it puts a rim click (patch 72). But i want it to do a snare hit (patch 104). How could i change this?

When you use a mouse to enter notes, the mouse does not give any MIDI data which is required for the program to tell it what note you want.  There are sometimes many notes associated with the same staff line/space and when you click a line or space, the program will decide which one you are wanting.  Hitting the + or - keys is the only way around that unless you go into the Percussion Map Designer and then find the notes that you do not want and click HIGHLIGHTED NOTE to uncheck this note.  It will then not come up when you click because it is not active.

In Summary:

1.  The percussion map is not corupted
2.  [quote]1. The percussion map may be corrupted. Edit each percussion map and under the Notes to Use for ";Staff Name";, select None (Clear), followed by All Named Notes. 3.  Mouse does not send any Midi Data.  If entering with a mouse, you may have to use the + or - keys to cycle through the possible sounds for that line/space
4.  You can click on the STAFF TOOL -->double click the staff in question -->Notation Style: Percussion and then click SELECT -->click EDIT when you have your percussion map highlighted in the list -->find the notes that you do not need in your staff that are highlighted (rim click maybe for you here) and click HIGHLIGHTED NOTE to uncheck this or take the * away.  You can also just click NONE(CLEAR) and then click Highlighted Note on the notes that you want to use.

I think this is more of the issue you are having.  Hopefully t hose clarifications and suggestions help.

Let us know if this helps.
Thanks, that is my issue. So the only way around it is to have a midi keyboard? Hitting the + or - for every note gets annoying, and i do need the other sounds, just i would rather have these as the main ones.
As I mentioned initially, a midi keyboard is the most common route however I am more than happy to input the correct notes using speedy entry or simple entry onto a separate treble clef staff (in concert pitch), then copy the notes to the percussion staff when done. It is most definitely faster to use a midi keyboard but I get by.

Coach is right. corrupted percussion map was maybe a bit too strong. Yes it happens on windows systems but the map can get messed up without leaving finale. I have sen this multiple times throughout multiple finale versions.

Mad....I think this happens when you have the designer open and then you Go to another active window (in or out of Finale) and then come back.  Everything gets reset to what it was, etc.  At least that is what I have seen.  :)

The order of the sounds I believe is hard-wired into the program, but you can turn off the sounds that you do not need by de-selecting it.  Otherwise, the + or - keys are your answer.  I agree not the most ideal.
I too am having the same issues....I'm trying to use the Finale template with the Kontakt Finale marching percussion map loaded.  The snare R & L sounds are where they should be on the MIDI keyboard (according to the keymapping), but in the Finale Percussion Map (C3 & D3) it has those listed as Crash & Bell of Ride and has the noteheads configured for those sounds (X notehead on E above C for crash, solid diamond on E below C for Bell of Ride.

If I use speedy entry to enter notes for snare, they playback correctly but are using the noteheads and placement for the crash and bell.  I feel like it's something simple, but I can't place my finger on it (maybe a config setting on the Oxygen8 keyboard?  I'm using the out-of-the-box settings).

Any help would be wonderfully appreciated!!!!  Thanks in advance~
Mike,

Are you attempting to use the Tapspace template with the VDL sounds? It sounds as though you're trying to use the Finale supplied sounds. This would explain the mapping issues. A bit more information would be helpful.

Hi Ted~

I have ";Play Finale through VST"; selected and have the Kontakt player loaded in Finale channels 1-16 in the VST setup, with the Finale Marching Perc Map loaded in the player.  I also have MIDI thru set to smart.

Thanks,
Mike
This may not be correct, but one thing that may cause confusion from time to time is that Middle C in Finale is C4 (i think), and Middle C in Kontakt Player (and the keymap diagrams for VDL) is actually C3. So in Finale, the RH/LH hits would be considered C3/D3, whereas in VDL, they'd call this C2/D2.

Confusing I know, but depending on the company different ones subscribe to different foundations.
Mike,

I think I understand the situation. If you read through Jim's post about middle C that should help to fix the problem. Using the transpose buttons on your MIDI keyboard will help to fix the confusion. In the mean time I will check the template and see if there are any problems.

Jim & Ted~

Thanks a bunch for the help....much appreciated!!

P.S.  Jim, the next time you bump into Ancona please say hi for me...we marched together @ Cadets~

Thanks again,
Mike
I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but I found the templates to be incorrect and incomplete. I spent days creating my own templates that I know work.
