Utah PAS "Day of Percussion"

OK I'm on the band wagon.

Utah PAS ";Day of Percussion"; will be hosted by Kandis Taylor on March 29th at Timberline Middle School. Masterclasses will be presented by She-E Wu and Alan Keown. The Utah DOP will also feature a Solo & Ensemble Festival open to jr. high, high school and university students.

Artist Bios:

Alan Keown
Alan Keown is a noted percussionist and teacher in the Pacific Northwest. As a performer he has worked with the Smothers Brothers, Suzanne Sommers, Sharri Lewis, the Britt Festival orchestra and numerous symphony orchestras including the renowned Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra. As a drum set artist he has performed in concerts and nightclubs throughout the Northwest, as well as recording studio dates for albums, jingles, and video projects.

He is a frequent consultant to high school and college band programs, and has been involved with Ted Turner's Goodwill Games as well as the competitive tour sponsored by Drum Corps International.

Alan is a clinician for Yamaha Drums, Promark drumsticks and Remo as well as the marching percussion specialist for several Salem, Oregon high schools. He is also the founder of the Alan Keown Marching Percussion Camp, currently held in Oregon. Mr. Keown publishes marching band music with Matrix Publishing Company and concert percussion literature with Alfred Publishing. Alan also teaches indoor drumline shows with marching show concepts.


She-e Wu
She-e Wu is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of Performance and Jazz Faculties at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey where she directs the Rutgers Percussion Ensemble (winner of the 2004 Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition) and coordinates the Percussion Program (Faculty includes Alan Abel and Chris Deviney).

Ms. Wu has appeared as a solo artist at the 25th, 27th and 30th Percussive Arts Society International Convention; Journées de la Percussion, NancyPhony Festival, perKumania festival, and PercuPassion Festival in France; Bach Symposium/Bach Variation Festival in Lincoln Center; Taiwan Connection concert at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center; International Percussion Festival and Interamerican Music and Arts Festival Orchestra in Puerto Rico; Festival Internacional de Percusion ";Ritmo Vital 2001"; and National Percussion Convention in Spain; Fukui Marimba Seminar in Japan; Giornate della Percussione in Italy; Taipei International Percussion Convention, and many other festivals. Ms. Wu has performed as guest recitalist and clinician at universities, colleges, conservatories in France, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, England, Germany as well American music institutions like Curtis Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, and at ";Days of Percussion"; throughout the United States.

Ms. Wu's composition Blue Identity was written for Frederic Macarez and the Paris Conservatory CNR percussion ensemble. The piece was premiered in Paris at the Journées de la Percussion festival and the American premiere took place at the 27th Percussive Arts Society International Convention. K-PAX, a piece for marimba duo, was commissioned by the Taipei International Percussion Convention in 2002 and was premiered with marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens. She-e's latest composition - 21 Grams, for solo percussion and five percussionists, scheduled to be premiered in spring 2007. Ms. Wu has served as a judge for PAS Composition Competition (Large Percussion Ensemble) in 2005 and International Percussion Ensemble Competition (College) in 2006.

 


Originally a timpanist and percussionist in her home country of Taiwan, she came to the United States in 1991 to study at the University of North Texas where she earned her Bachelor and Master's Music degrees. Her teachers include Dr. Robert Schietroma, Leigh Howard Stevens, Ed Soph, and Tzong-Ching Ju. She also studied composition with Dr. Joseph Klein.

She-e is a member of the Bob Becker Ensemble. Her recording of Eric Ewazen's marimba concerto with the International Sejong Soloists was released on Resonator Records in 2003. Her solo marimba CD Snapshot and her recording with Flautist Bart Feller were released in 2006.

Ms. Wu is a clinician and a recitalist for the Innovative Percussion, Dynasty and Zildjian companies. Her new line of signature mallets with Innovative Percussion will be available in spring 2007.
