Installing VDL1 with Sibelius 5

First off, is it even possible?

If so, how is it done?  I'm mainly having trouble with what needs to be done in Kontakt.  Basically..everything.  Thanks a lot in advance.
Is this a problem with VDL 1 or VDL2-2.5??

It is possible to use VDL1 with Sibelius 5.

You can't host the library as a plug-in within Sibelius 5 though (needs to be KontaktPlayer2 or the like). You will need to use MIDI Yoke (or the equivalent) and in Sibelius you will need to use manual sound set(s). Please review the VDL1 / Sibelius 5 documentation for more - and you may have to extensively search the VDL1 forum archives to find what you need.

(Jim, anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

Or ...

I highly recommend that you spend the money on VDL 2.5 - way less headaches for your writing endeavors! (Have you read the Sib 5.1 Readme and/or viewed the tutorial vids?)

Oh, one more thing: Are you using the full version of Kontakt (and which version)? If so, I don't know if VDL1 is compatible with it. Jim?

There are a few steps to this question.

First - VDL1 would have to be loaded into some sort of compatible sample player in order to be played at all. This could be done in the full version of Kontakt (not Kontakt Player), Gigastudio, Reason, or others that are capable of converting Giga or Soundfont formatted sounds.

Next, depending on what sample player you're using, you'd need to configure Sibelius's playback configurations. Using Kontakt, you could still host the player as an AU or VST plugin directly in Sibelius, which is definitely most convenient. If not hosting as a plugin, that would mean you're running the sampler in stand-alone mode (i.e. Gigastudio) in which case you'd need to route MIDI out of Sibelius into the player by way of a virtual midi cable like Maple Midi or Miki Yoke.

From there, you'd need to either A) create your own sound set using something like Sibelius's Sound Set Editor, or experiment with using a manual sound set. Either of these options may prove to be a bit of a challenge for complete compatibility. Still, if you're tenacious, never say never.

Hugh has pretty much summed up the quick answer. You'll save a ton of time bypassing all the potential headaches this process may present by jumping straight into VDL 2.5 which Sibelius 5 is designed to work well with.

That is exactly why you don't enjoy a few brews then try and answer questions.

Ha! It happens to the best of us...frequently. :)
Coulldn't you use the current VDL 2.5 template and soundset though?  Since VDL 1 mappings were created, couldn't you load those instruments and load the VDL 1 sounds in to Kontakt?
I don't think so. The VDL 2.5 sound set is looking for a specifically identified Kontakt library and wouldn't recognize VDL1 without a sound set that defines it.
Durrr...I didn't even think of that.
