Sometimes i think marching music moves too fast

I mean from idea to idea.  I like things to develop for a long time once in awhile.  it seems like it the music isn't constantly changing, it's no good and (BAH) doesn't get as many points!  Can this genre more forward with a malleable format that may eventually lead to something we can't even imagine today? It certainly hasn't changed much within the time I have had my ear to it. Thoughts?
ok i've got 56 views on this thread and no replies! nobody has an opinion that they can voice to help me out?
Change may be relative to whomever you talk to. I think marching music has changed a lot over the years, but that's just this guy's perception. Anytime you have to put an objective ";grade"; on something subjective like music, criticism may be inevitable, which may be what you're eluding to. Remember that ";marching music"; is less often created to stand solely on its own, but rather to accompany some sort of bigger picture. As most people reading this forum may be percussion-centric people, it's healthy to remind ourselves of this. I can't predict the future, but creativity has a way of leading to new ideas. So by all means take your ideas, run with them, and push your creative boundaries!

While trends change over time, good music is still good music.

As Jim points out, there is a great deal of relativeness to it all. If you take a group of people from the baroque era and had them listen to our music of today, it would be quite alienating. I dare to say that it would totally shock their ears and most would not like it at all. Music is always evolving and changing. In fact, it has to or people would get really really bored. With change comes crap, but also progress.

I'm assuming your post is referring to the fact that Drumcorps (and bands) used to play 3 long tunes in a given show and now they tend to play many shorter tunes with dramatic transitions and diverse style changes. This trend is a response to people getting bored of hearing birdland year after year <yes i am former crossmen:)>  and wanting something more crazy. If you don't like it, that's ok! People will get bored of this trend too and move onto something different or return to the retro way of doing it.
great comments guys.  i am in my second year of writing percussion parts for outdoor high school bands and I feel so green.

on another note, do you think Cage's 4'33"; would be a neat indoor piece?  i'm itching to try it.  would  you as audience members be really upset it that happened?

Sorry, but the only thing I could think of when this popped up was a gym full of student going, ";What?";, parents saying ";I don't get it, they didn't play"; and a whole bunch of instructors thinking ";really... really?!?!?";. Then everyone would be angered at the fact because they won with a perfect execution score. LMAO. It was all pretty humorous in my head, lol. 7 am and you put a smile on my face.

On the more serious side, when you think general audience... they aren't quite as accepting as everyone would like. Most things in the experimental realm are only put up with by the more musically educated in hopes of something great emerging. Only speaking from my experience here. No harm intended. Peace...

I'm still convinced you are another reputable member of the forum incognito...

But aside from that, I think it would be hilarious. Perhaps that piece was written before it's time....in fact, I don't think it's time has come just yet. Maybe try in 100 years.

I'm not with you on that, Charlie...
I'm not any other member besides myself on this forum.  The only other forum I frequent is a music forum far far away from here on the world wide superhighway of internets.  I think this fourm could become less business and formal and more casual and social.  I want more people to show up here and make this a good hang out. I don't want to get into any established drum corps or marching percussion chat rooms or forums or rec group or what'er.  I'm a fan of tapspace and I think we can all agree on that and start from there.  That is why I post silly stuff like cage 4'33"; and my thoughts on marching music composition.
