I am currently running VDL 2.5 with Sibelius 5.1 just updated to 5.2 and I am having issues with playback on the tenorline when inputting skanks. When i hit the designated key on my MIDI keyboard I hear the ";skank"; sample, but then when going back through the notes or when playing it back, all I get is silence. I cross checked the note heads and the articulation markings in the Template ReadMe and I am still getting nothing. I am having this same issues with Bass Drum unison hits with the muted Left hand and unison Bass Drum crushes. Any help would be much appreciated.
P.S. This problem did not fix itself when I upgraded to 5.2. In fact, I noticed that in the process of upgrading I lost my Sibelius Essentials sound set. When I edited my playback options all I had was the VDL 5.2 and Virtual Drumline 2.5
When you open Kontakt Player within Sibelius, do you see Essentials as an installed library (within KP2)? The reason I ask is because there's a possibility that you don't have Essentals installed. If you don't, Sibelius 5.2 will no longer offer a sound set for a library you don't have installed. Out of the box, Sibelius 5.2 comes included with an Essentials sound set. So this leads me to believe you may not have Essentials installed.
Regarding the tenorline ";skank"; and the bassline Muted LH Unison hits, do you recall if these were performing correctly when you were using 5.1? If you're not sure, that's okay too, but in order to troubleshoot this properly, that will be valuable info to know.

I had Sound Essentials when I had 5.1. I know this for a fact because I used Sibelius for a Theory project I had. Also, I was encountering the playback issues in 5.1.

On Windows, Sibelius is looking in the registry for this information. When you install Essentials or any other KP2 formatted library, the NI installer places the relevent information there. I suppose it's doing something similar on Macs.

1 - Launch Sibelius 5.2 2 - Go to Play>Playback Devices 3 - Select an activated Kontakt Player 2 from your ";active devices"; area (on the right), then click the ";Show"; button. 4 - With the KP2 window now open, do you see Essentials in the left-hand browser column?
If you're not seeing it, it's not properly installed and I'd recommend re-installing Sibelius. Not sure how the 5.2 update may have affected that, but Sibelius support should be able to help you.
If you ARE seeing it, and you're still not seeing ";Essentials"; as an available option on your activated Kontakt Player device, that would also be a problem. Are you sure you weren't looking in a non-Kontakt related device? That sound set will only be an available option on Kontakt devices. If it's just not there, I'd recommend you contact Sibelius support.
I'm not sure what to tell you on the bassline/tenorline problems. My recommendation would be to download a fresh template, configure the score to your preferences, and paste the music into it. It sounds like something may have gone awry with your file.

Thanks Jim and Hugh. I'll try downloading the template again. Sound Essentials is not appearing in my KP2 so I guess I'll try reinstalling.
Thanks,
Clint

I just realize I may have misspoken in my previous post. When suggested possibly re-installing, I meant to try re-installing Essentials (not Sibelius). Sorry about that! Just a suggestion though. For a more informed answer, I'd still recommend you contact Sibelius support.

Essentials will only show up inside Sibelius. It will not show up in a stand-alone instance of KontaktPlayer2. Just wanted to make sure you know.

Great News!!!! Some how when entering in skanks this evening they worked just fine. I guess I was doing something funky with the input and the articulation markings needed. Still haven't figured out what's up with my crushes or muffled hits. The crushes go all across the bored: Snare, Tenor, and Bass; short and fat crushes. None of them playback. I don't know what I may be doing wrong. I have checked and rechecked, and then checked again to make sure I have the correct not heads selected.

For crushes, it's crucial that you've assigned the correct articulation. Be sure to read the part about the ";inverted mordent"; which is programmed as a custom articulation in the template. Information can be learned on page 19 of the VDL/Sibelius Template readme. If you don't have this actual articulation assigned via the keypad, you won't likely hear your crushes.

Hi there,
I still cannot get my tenor skanks to work. I have tried the ";V"; articulation, but is still sounds like a rim click. Any suggestions?

A list of your system specs would be a great start:
1) Mac or PC? 2) Computer specs: RAM, processor speed, sound card, etc. 2) Finale or Sibelius (and which version)? 3) Are you using the template and sound set?
A good idea would be to add this to your signature so you don't have to list it every time you need assistance.
