recently made the switch to Sib. 5 from Finale of 10 years and could not be happier. One question though. I do not use a midi keyboard at all...but...
When looking at the mappings for lets say Rack Combo A. There is a tom note that shares a space with the concert snare. I tried doing the notehead change shortcut on the keyboard but to no avail it does not play back right. nothing at all actually. please help!!!
When you have different sounds that are mapped to the same line or space on a staff, you can change the sound (and the notehead will change automatically), by pressing the plus or minus key. This will work whether you are in Speedy Edit or Simple Edit mode. Try that and let me know if solves the problem.

He is on Sibelius now, FYI. Are you using a Mac? You may want check this thread which is a virtual midi keyboard:
Also, in the future it would help if you gave the thread a title that was more descriptive of your problem rather than a cry for help.
