Here's an interesting article about using the USB Rock Band drumset with Garage Band on a Mac, but it would work with many other programs:

Here's how it could work for VDL- you could assign pads to snare R-hand, L-hand, R-shot, L-shot and have a cool way to enter snare parts into your computer by recording what you drum.

It's wireless though- I don't think you'll be able to connect it to a computer with USB. It's also three drum pads instead of four (+ cymbals)

Supposedly the Guitar Hero World Tour drumset supposed to be closer to reality, with crash cymbals and stuff
