So, I've recently purchased Sibelius 5 (now running 5.2) and it came with the Sound Essentials, which includes some VDL 2.5 sounds.  I've heard people talk about how much easier it is to use the VDL template in Sibelius.  Will the 2.5 template work with Sound Essentials?

No.  With SSE you should use the instruments included with Sibelius.  The template only applies to the full version of VDL 2.5.
