I just used the unison BD stock In sound for the first time, and placed a note with notehead #21 on the middle space, as indicated in the VDL readme. No sound was playing back, so I checked the instrument staff type. In my score this sound is actually mapped to notehead #57. I checked a vanialla version of the template and the mapping is to notehead #57 there as well.
The sound is also very quiet; the individual drum stick in sounds are much louder.
I am using the BD Manual instrument. Is this just a typo in the readme?

No, it is an incorrect assignment in the instrument mapping. If you were wondering why no one has mentioned anything about this error before, it's because - I believe - most people use a MIDI keyboard for input, which inputs the notehead that is in the instrument mapping. Only the notehead number is wrong.
This has been fixed in the [s]soon-to-be-released[/s] now available Template 6.0.

Ok, as long as the map is as you guys expect it to be, then I'll just make a mental note that I need to use notehead 57.
Any reason why this sound is so quiet? At a dynamic of forte the individual sticks in sounds are about the right level, but I need to give the unison sticks in sound a dynamic of fff and bump the volume controller up to 127 to make it match the individual sounds.

My guess would be a library programming thing. You will probably have to use your current work-around for a while.
