Adding new playback dictionary entries - Sib 3.1 VDL 2.5
The VDL Sound Set is designed to use a sound ID change to trigger the puffy mallet sounds for the TenorLine and BassLine instruments. In fact, all of the instruments that have Keyswitch type sounds will operate this way - and most of the Modulation stuff too.

This would be entered into the score via a Staff Text command that you would have to have defined in the Playback Dictionary. A corresponding staff text command would then be used to go back to the regular mallet sounds.

Hey there chznvrt (and everyone else),

I've been searching/reading on the forums for at least a couple hours.  At first I was just trying to figure out how to do the key switch, it didn't seem to be working right but I was able to solve that through the many helpful threads on here and now it's working very well.  That said, I'm on Sib 3.1/VDL 2.5 and your note about adding to the playback dictionary has piqued my interest!  When I go into the dictionary I see some fields that I'm just not sure how to edit.  They are:

Effect, Value, Unit, Value, Unit

I don't suppose someone would be willing to share with me what those fields should say?  I'm trying to make new ";Puffy Mallets"; and ";Regular Mallets"; dictionary entries.

Thanks everyone!

As far as I know, you cannot do keyswitches using the Dictionary in Sibelius 4 and earlier. You have to enter a note on the staff that would in turn trigger the keyswitch. And you said you figured this part out already, so you're good there.

With the release of Sibelius 5, SoundWorld was introduced. This totally changed the way we setup our Sibelius writing environment. I could go into a rather long explanation of the behind-the-scenes flow of how keyswitches work, but let's just hit the highlights.

Keyswitches in SoundWorld need a couple of things to happen. 1) A Dictionary item that is set to make a sound ID change. This is what you would enter onto the staff. 2) The altered sound ID defined in the Sound Set. This is where the actual keyswitch takes place as this information then goes on to KontaktPlayer2 to produce the resultant sounds you are after.

You may want to take a serious look at upgrading to Sib 6. Use the link below to view the Sib Template 5.2.5 video tutorials (6 works virtually the same). One good pass through the vids should give you the info you need (skip #8 if you want). The last three probably show the most regarding the work flow and user friendliness.

If you decide to upgrade, you'll also need this: VDL Template 6.0

Hugh,

Many thanks for your thorough response.  It's interesting about Sib 5, I was using it on a friend's computer and I noticed that the 10-key pad navigation wasn't the same as 3.1.  Using 3.1, I developed a very efficient way (for me anyway) of putting notes in a score, for example, if I want a bar of eighth notes, I select that bar, press 3 as many times as I need for all the notes to be 8th notes, then press 0 to change them from rests to notes, and then press the up/down arrow to get to the pitches (or sounds) I want.  I found that this didn't work in 5, do you know if that method will work in 6?

Neat videos, I wish there were more like that for tips and tricks with Sib!

As far as note input goes, I'd say that a MIDI keyboard works the best. To each their own though.
Heh, well yeah.  I just got int he habit/rhythm (no pun intended) of doing it ";my way"; -- I still use the midi keyboard to get the right note heads and sounds and such, but I use the keypad to assign the note values (and pitches for the pit instruments).  But like you said, we all work differently, it's all good.

Cheers.
Hey Everyone,

I figured out how to do that toggle I was talking about (for Sib 6)!  Go into preferences, menus and short cuts, notes, toggle rests and then assign num 0 to it.  It will say you have to make a new profile and that's cool, just do it.

Ok, so now that I have that figured out, does anyone know how to change the playback options so they will mimic Sib 3.1?  When I stop playback I don't want it to pause (the green line just stops where I stopped it), I want it to go back to the first note of the selection I have made w/o having to manually rewind or reselect.  I dug around in the preferences but didn't see that any where.  Help?

Rob
A friend of mine suggested using the P key and the space bar, I was using the play and stop buttons on the playback window.  P and space bar did the trick. ;D
