Assigning Sounds

First, I looked through the FAQ with no success.

Is there a way to assign specific sounds from VDL to specific notes in Finale 07?
Current problem: I have to use the minus (-) and plus (+) keys to either flat or sharp the notes to find the proper sound each time I input a note into Finale. (Specifically for battery instruments) Basically, I am looking for a way to assign all of the most useful snare sounds to notes close together (and actually on the staff)

I am using Finale 2007 on a Windows Vista machine, Kontakt 3 player in plug-in mode (Kontakt 2 brings up the ‘patch’ error.)

Thanks guys, and good luck to those auditioning soon!
It would be worth your while to look into messing around with the Staff Styles and Percussion Maps in Finale if you're interested in creating your own maps.  You will, however, be limited to the sounds that are contained within each VDL instrument.
If you're using the FULL version of VDL 2.5, I recommend you stick to using Kontakt Player 2. KP2 is different than Kontakt 2.

If you're using the Finale 2007 template, you'll find many of the unpitched percussion instruments already have percussion maps available. Using the template, you can view these by:

1-Selecting the Staff Tool
2-Double-clicking a measure in a staff
3-Clicking on the ";edit"; button by ";notation style"; when it's set to ";percusion.";
Thanks for the help and suggestions, I will look around in the map and see if i can figure out an easier setup.
Jim C- I assume the VDL DVD i purchased is the full version, unless i have missed a new update. However, the Kontakt 2 player gives the ";This patch was generated in a newer version of Kontakt 2"; error. After updating to Finale 2007C and updating VDL and Kontakt, it still gave the error, so i gave up and settled with Kontakt 3.
Thanks!
I specified the full version of VDL only because some folks have confused it with the ";VDLite"; sounds that come with newer versions of Finale. But since you're using Finale 2007, that wouldn't apply to you anyway. I failed to make that connection when responding to you last time. ";VDLite"; sounds were only included from Finale 2009 and up. So you can disregard that part.

Most likely, that error message you're seeing (";This patch was generated in a newer version of Kontakt 2";) has to do with your KontaktPlayer2.dll file which you'll find located at C:\Program Files\Finale 2007\FinaleVST. This is the VST file for Kontakt Player 2 that Finale will reference, and it's probably out of date.

I think you'll find your solution by following TylerDurden's instructions here. If not, let us know.
James,

Are you using a MIDI keyboard to enter notes or just the mouse?

If you're using just a mouse, then this is probably the root of your problem. The percussion maps in Finale 2007 should place all of the different sounds on the staff. You can if you'd like change their placement location and the type of notehead. What you can't do is change which sound is assigned to which actual pitch or MIDI note. That is done within VDL and set up by Jim and Murray. You could, if you had the time and the software remap all of the sounds using the samples. But I don't really see the need for all of the extra work.

I say all of this because you mention looking for a way to ";assign all of the most useful snare sounds to notes closer together.

Ted
Thanks for the link Jim C, I will check it out asap and see if that fixes the problem.
Ted- I am using just my mouse to enter notes. I was just looking for an easier solution than dragging the note around until I found the specific sound I was looking to use.
Update: I followed instructions and ran into the same problem that Dylan did in that page. I updated Kontakt to 2.2.4, but the .dll file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Native Instruments\Kontakt Player 2\FinaleVST is file version 2.1.1. which is the problem because (as i understand) the .dll file is a link to the Kontakt program from inside Finale.
James,

You got it. This is why I recommended reading TylerDurden's instructions in the link I posted above. When you updated to Kontakt Player 2.2.4, Windows doesn't automatically locate all other copies of the plugin (like the one in your FinaleVST folder). So you'll need to swap that older one with the newer one you recently updated. Just a simple copy/paste. This should solve your problem.
But the problem remains: I am copy/pasting the same .dll file version between the two folders.
The application Kontakt2 is product version 2.2.4 (as per the update) but the KontaktPlayer2.dll file in the Native Instruments VSTPlugins folder is still 2.1.1 even after the update (confusing).
So unless i misunderstood what a .dll file does, Finale is still trying to access Kontakt 2.1.1 via the old .dll file that did not get updated for some reason (which I removed from Finale after the 2.2.4 update and replaced with the .dll file from C:\Program Files (x86)\Native Instruments\Kontakt Player 2\VSTPlugins)
Is there a way for me to create a new/get a new .dll file that will point Finale toward the new and improved Kontakt 2.2.4 application?
James - I apologize. I misunderstood your previous post and thought you were saying that your .dll file within the KP2>VSTPlugins folder was correctly updated.

When you ran the updater (installer) to KP2 (2.2.4), did it give you the option to select the application, as well as the VST Plugin? Usually it does. It's possible that when you ran the installer, the VST Plugin option wasn't checked.

If you're certain you installed the KP2 (2.2.4) VST Plugin, do a search for KontaktPlayer2.dll on your computer. You'll probably get a few results. Of the files you find, check the properties on each, and take note of which one is version 2.2.4. This is the one you'll want to copy, then past into your FinaleVST folder.

Hope this helps!
It is no problem at all, thanks for helping!
I ran the installer again, this time carefully reading through each update update folder destination. As it turns out, i was searching for the updated .dll file in the Native Instruments folder when the updater created a new folder outside of the NI folder (in Program Files) where it installed the updated .dll files.
Simple problems seem to create the biggest fuss.
Thanks for the help!
James
Ah! Glad to hear you're back on track, James. Enjoy!

That's interesting.  So it created a new KP2 folder or a VST plugins folder?
