Sounds like you need to spend some time learning Finale.  You will be a much better VDL user when you learn the notation program.  Here is the link to the learning center on Make Music's site:

Select the STAFF TOOL.  See the attached picture for which handle to click on the staff.  At that point, just hit your backspace key, or select Delete Staves from the Staff menu.

This should be in your Finale documentation.
