Why are the percussion judge tapes on DCI DVD's censored?
I haven't bought a season since I got the DCI field pass thing, but I was watching the 04 season the other day and it's kinda funny to turn on the judge audio and see whole 45 second spans (especially the BD segment) where you can see the judge's mouth moving but you only hear the regular audio overdubed so you can't hear what he's saying.
Just wondering if there was some super good reason for this.
Speaking of which, for those that teach drum corps, do you let your kids listen to the tapes? I think I may have heard just one, and it was mid season sometime.

In the excitement of the moment, it could be deleted expletives. :)

Oh, I see! I think I misinterpreted your original post. Interesting...not sure what might be going on there.
I'm not sure, but it may have something to do with whether or not a certain musical excerpt was cleared for a synchronization license. They may have gotten permission to arrange, but without a sync license the producers probably wouldn't be able to legally allow that music to be included on the DVD.
Well if you turn on the judges audio on the DVD, you'll notice that it's not actually the judge's tape by itself, someone went through the trouble to mix and sync the overall mix of the music with the judges tape. Then when the judge seems to be saying something critical, they drop audio on the judge tape and just mix in the regular audio comes through. So I don't think it's a licensing thing since all the same music is being heard.
It's kind of wild to hear the drumline loud and clear while the judge is talking one minute, then seeing his mouth move when he's right on top of the snare line but only hearing brass through the speakers the next minute. Just seemed kinda shady. I'll try to get some specific tracks and numbers for ya. I don't THINK i'm crazy, but ya never know....

If it's the BD tape in question, they might be censoring what the members are saying ;)
