Silent Bass Unisons?

I'm running VDL 2.5.2, Sibelius 6.2, on a MacBook Pro 15"; OS X 10.6.4

Most of what I do is take a band score, (which is normally created in Finale, & sent to me in XML), & add Battery percussion.  Everything sounds great, UNTIL I want to hear a bass drums in unison.  They are silent.

I've gone through all the instructions, & all the speedbumps I've had have been fixed, except for this one.  What am I missing?

It leaves me with an empty feeling...because it sounds empty.

Help!

Thanks,

Nick
Are you using the Sibelius 6 template or the 5.2.5 template? If it's the latter, then that's your problem. Here's the fix for that (https://www.tapspace.com/forums/index.php?topic=3167.msg16730#msg16730), unless you'd just prefer to purchase the 6.0a template, in which that problem was fixed.

If that's not the case, are you saying that ALL bass unisons are silent?
I am using VDL Soundset 6.0a

Most times, when I open a score that is created by me or another person using Sibelius, & JUST percussion, the bass drums playback fine.

But since I'm using a whole band score, that was originally created in Finale, sent to me in xml, & imported into Sibelius, they don't like to playback.  The individual bass drum notes are playing back, just not unison hits, rims, buzzes, etc.

Could the xml be the problem?

More than likely - especially if the other scenarios you mentioned work correctly.

When the xml file is imported, what noteheads are placed on the bassline staff (and where)? Or are you already changing them to match the diagram and they (unisons) still don't work?
When the xml is imported, I create the Snare/Quad/Bassline parts, & as I enter notes, the individual drums show up as a regular notehead for the basses, & sound fine.  I enter unisons on the ";b"; line, or ";g"; line (I've tried both), & show up as a regular notehead, & I <Shift&+> to get the notehead to number 28 I believe - the slash with a stem.

Does that make sense?
Yes it does. I'll get back with you later.
Thanks for looking into this Hugh!
OK, let me walk through this. (This assumes you're using Sib VDL Template 6.0a like I think you said you were.)

    "; When the xml is imported, I create the Snare/Quad/Bassline parts ... ";

Are you using SnareLine Manual, TenorLine Manual and BassLine Manual? It's OK if you're using the AutoRL or LITE instruments instead.

    "; ... as I enter notes, the individual drums show up as a regular notehead for the basses, & sound fine. ... ";

The regular notehead you refer to is notehead 0, which is pretty much the default for everything in Sibelius. The Manual instruments use notehead 0 for the right hand regular hits and the AutoRL instruments use notehead 0 for both right and left hits. Either way, you'll get playback from this part of the import.

    "; ... I enter unisons on the ";b"; line, or ";g"; line (I've tried both), & show up as a regular notehead,
      & I <Shift&+> to get the notehead to number 28 I believe - the slash with a stem. ";

This is where the problem seems to be. Notehead 28 is not used in the Template instrument mappings (6.0 and 6.0a), mostly because the default setting for that notehead is silent (no playback). You'll need to change it to notehead 46 (RH / AutoRL) or 47 (LH). (You'll only get results from the b line of the staff. All Sibelius unpitched percussion instruments display the percussion clef, but use the treble clef for mapping purposes.)

For any other sounds (including unison rims, buzzes, dreads etc), just change the notehead to what matches that sound you want from the Readme mapping diagrams. The BassLine diagrams start on page 43 of the VDL_README_6.0a.pdf file.

If this doesn't solve the issue, we may need to dig deeper. Let us know.
Thanks Hugh!

I'll get to work on this when I get a chance, & get back to you!
