I think I'll definitely wait until compatibility is confirmed before I upgrade. With the integration from the current Sibelius, I'd like to think VDL 2.5 should be a pretty smooth upgrade. However, the templates could be another story. I'm sure The Write Score will be on top of it once they get a chance to try out the application.
ON a side note.... Holy Hard Drive Space Batman! It looks like the sound libraries provided in Sibelius 7 got huge.
IMPORTANT: It will take many hours to download Sibelius 7, requiring approximately 65 GB of hard drive space for installation (24 GB for download installer, plus 40 GB for sound library installation). If you are concerned about internet caps or time constraints, we highly recommend the boxed version. If you choose the download version, we recommend also buying the Replacement Discs.

Is it just me or do the new Rumble sounds included with Sibelius 7 sound a lot like VDL 1?
Avid has gone a different direction, and as such, The VDL percussion sounds (including concert percussion) that used to come included with their ";Essentials"; library will not be included in Sibelius 7. We're grateful so many Sibelius users had free access to our instruments in Sibelius 5 and Sibelius 6. We put a lot of love into them, and I think they'll be missed. Fortunately, the full version of VDL will still work just fine in Sibelius 7 for those who still need a full and versatile set of reasonably priced concert and marching percussion samples.
And VDL isn't going anywhere, so please don't worry about that! ;)
I know Hugh has been hard at work on updating the VDL Templates for Sibelius 7, so expect some news from him over at The Write Score sometime soon.

Yeah... The percussion demo reminds me of old finale sounds... Why would they pick marimba ";rolls"; as a good demonstration of the sounds?? I think the percussion sounds have definitely taken a big step backwards, and a 10-fold increase in the size of the program (with not near that level of improvement) has me agreeing with Justin... I will probably just use Kontakt 4 and VDL and bypass sib sounds completely... I'll only upgrade because I know Avid will stop supporting Sib 6 on Lion like they did with 5 and Snow Leopard!

*** Use this information at your own risk ***
Just did a very very crude test of figuring everything out with Sibelius 7, VDL, and TheWriteScore template (v6).
All seems to work well, dump the xml file in Sibelius via a different route though.
On a Mac...
Right Click ";Sibelius"; Click ";Show Package Contents"; (Don't mess with this stuff... seriously [other than this]) Travel to... Contents/Components/Sounds/ Drop the .xml file from TheWriteScore (v6) in here.
Everything else is as the direction have stated in the template ReadMe file.
Oh and as Jim said, use Kontakt Player 4 (Kontakt Player 2 didn't even show up for me).
I anticipate Hugh will take advantage of Sibelius 7 in some great new way, maybe this will help those on the bleeding edge get by till then.
Again... use at your own risk and happy writing!

I do have some great things planned for the next round of templates. More on that later.

That's unfortunate to hear. These sounds are important to those on a music-writing team that don't own VDL. The SoundWorld system at least gave non-VDL users a semblance of what it actually written using VDL and an appropriate template.
Any idea if the next-best substitute used by SoundWorld is anywhere close to accurate?

I'm testing that later today.
I have clients that will not bother installing the Sib 5 or 6 Essentials library when the school year starts with re-imaged or new computers. Since they don't use VDL, the easy transition from full VDL to the Essentials library was nice when working with multiple arrangers.
$299.00 is a bit much for a library that doesn't come close to the quantity and quality that VDL 2.5 offers.

I think that this is actually a good thing for Virtual Drumline. If people want these sounds, they'll have to get the real deal, not just a very stripped down version of it included with the software.
Don't confuse SoundWorld with either of the Essentials or 7 Sounds sample libraries. SoundWorld is the ";engine";, if you will, that helps integrate any and all libraries that a person may choose to use.

They definitely took a step back with the marching sounds. Unless I'm missing something, there are no buzz roll sounds for snares (see attached)? There's a roll sound, but it's just a normal roll.
I tried switching from the Sib 6 Essentials set to the Sibelius 7 one and had some mixed/poor results...

The sound set calls them buzz rolls. The only thing I can think of is that a non-percussionist approved them as such. I don't know. That's what people get for now anyways.

Oh well.
I do really like 64-bit support, the ribbon has been fine so far for finding things I forgot the keystroke for, the new text font is nice, and the new Inspector has saved some time.

The way I understand it, if the exact sound Sibelius is looking for isn't there (as occurs when a VDL-based score is played back by a user that doesn't have VDL) the SoundWorld engine finds the next-best sound that is actually available. Currently, in Sibelius 5 and 6, SoundWorld finds a next-best sound in the Essentials library that isn't too unrealistic, at least for basic notation. I was asking if SounWorld finds an appropriate next-best sound in Sib 7.

OK, I see what you're asking. Yes, that is one of the things that SoundWorld is designed to do.
