Sibelius Sounds question

Hi guys,

I'm running Sib. 7 with VDL 2.5.5, Kontakt 5 on a Macbook.  I am working on a marching band score with the template but it's not playing back all sounds.  I have Sibelius 7 sounds and 2 instances of VDL sound sets running.

I thought in past versions of Sibelius that I was able to add more instances of Sibelius sounds but in my current version it's not showing Sibelius sounds in the available devices side.  I've tried using Garritan's and Sibelius Sounds 5 through another instance of Kontakt but it's still not working.  Any advice?

Thanks!
Hi Andy

Sibelius 7 (and 6) only gives you one instance of Sibelius Player to use. However, that does allow you to have up to 128 slots/channels available, depending on your setting for this in File > Preferences > Playback > Sibelius Player Options.

Can you attach a screen shot of your Playback Configuration?
Hugh,

Thanks for the reply.  I've attached the screenshot.

Andy
Just in case it may help I'm attaching a pic of the File>Playback settings.  Again, thanks so much for your help!!!

Andy
Hi Andy,

Yeah, as Hugh mentioned, you'll only see one instance of Sib Sounds to pull from on the left side of the Playback Config window. Since you already have it loaded into your configuration on the right, that is why it doesn't show up on the left.

You didn't say which sounds are missing_VDL or Sibelius Sounds? My best guess based on the information you've given is that either A) you don't have enough instances of Kontakt loaded (that's if you're missing VDL sounds during playback; or B) you're experiencing a strange bug in Sib 7 whereby it doesn't automatically know which player to set up for which tracks. A few of us on here have seen this.

If you rule out option A above, then open the Mixer window and hit the button that looks like the cellphone reception bars on the left side. This will expand the window. Hit it a couple times until you see the info about which players and instruments are loaded into which staves. Sometimes Sibelius mistakenly uses the Sibelius Player for VDL sounds, rather than Kontakt like it should. So on staves where you know they should be VDL sounds, check to make sure you see ";Kontakt 5"; or ";K.5"; or similar where the player is listed. If it says S. Play or similar, this means it's got the wrong player configured. You can manually force it to use one of your Kontakt instances, which should solve the issue for that particular file.

Hope this helps!

BTW, to do a ";screenshot"; for future reference, press Command-Option-4 on your Mac to get the little crosshairs. Then you can select the window you're trying to take the picture of, and it'll wind up on your desktop.
Andy, do you have all your staves set to (Auto) in the Mixer?

Murray, is this a default OS X function?
Hugh_yes, Command-Option-4 for selecting your own area, or Command-Option-3 for the entire screen.
Cool! I'll be passing that on to people that can make use of the tip.

Thank you sir!
Thanks guys!  Thanks Murray for the info on the screenshot.

I've gotten in the mixer and it looks like everything is correctly being sent.  I tested each sound and it seems to be the trombones, tubas, euphoniums, and synths that aren't making any noise.  They are all supposed to be playing through the Sibelius Sounds.  When I try to go in and manually change one particular sound then it seems to change all of the files as well.

Still scratching my head a bit because all the VDL and most of the wind sounds are working fine.  Ahhhh....who needs a tuba or euphonium part :)

I'll take a screenshot of the mixer for you.

Thanks!

Attached is the pic of the mixer.

Thanks!
Hi Andy,

That is strange for sure. I'm noticing in your screenshot that some of the Sib Sounds players have the parentheses around them and some don't. In the world of Sibelius, parentheses around the player or instrument indicates ";Auto Load"; functionality. So you typically want to see those parentheses around the players. As I mentioned previously, in Sibelius 7 there has been evidence of some real quirky behavior with the Auto Load functionality. So I'm wondering if that's what is going on in your case.

In your screenshot, some of the Sib Players have the parens…some don't. I'm wondering what would happen if you manually went in and changed the various malfunctioning staves to manually select the correct players and instruments. When you do this, you'll notice that Sib seems to blank out all the other staves, don't worry about this. I'm not sure why it does this—it might even be some sort of bug as well. But when you make the changes, just hit ";Play"; and let Sibelius reset everything and load up. Then you'll start to see the results of your changes.

Hope this helps! Let us know if manually selecting does the trick. If not, this is probably a question for the Sibelius folks at this point.

Thanks,
Thanks Murray!  I'll check it out for sure.  Appreciate your help!

This may seem kind of buggy, but it's actually normal (for Sibelius). It changes because it knows you've made a change and is getting psyched (ready) for you to hit Play at which point it will then load / reload everything.

Andy, go into the Mixer and set everything to (Auto). I'd like to see what happens after that. (Can do in a copy of the file if you'd like.)

Hugh
I am having this exact same problem...down to the Euphoniums and tubas as well. I've manually changed the instruments in the mixer and still nothing. The odd thing though...is that I see the bar moving on the low brass channels telling me it's picking up the signal, but no sound is coming out.

I've tried the auto function and it assigns everything correctly...but no playback on the low brass.
I forgot to mention that this is from importing an XML file and then copy and pasting everything into the VDL 7.0 template. I've tried adding a new instrument and manually putting in the notes again using my own input device but that did not solve the problem.
