Having trouble with the installer

I just bought VDL and am having trouble with the connect installer. I keep getting a message that the sonicwall gateway is blocking it. One time it got through, and my PC says the app can't run on this PC. HELP! I am so tired of midi drumline sounds and want to get my VDL going!

I'm not sure what a sonicwall gateway is, but I'm wondering if it's a firewall system that (perhaps) your school has set up on their network? If that's the case, you may need to get the school's IT department involved. Or, you may want to simply using the downloader from your normal/home system, then once you've downloaded the library you can place it on a thumb drive or something similar to transfer it to your school machine.

I'm just making assumptions based on your post though. Is this a school network or something? If you can give us more details about the situation in which you're trying to download, maybe we can give you some more informed ideas. It sounds like an unusual scenario.
I am trying to get it installed with my home copy of Sibelius. And you may be right about the firewall thing. My own computer has Windows Defender. But I do not have internet at home yet, so the free wifi at school is my best bet, besides doing the whole coffee shop thing.

Thanks Jim, sometimes you just need someone else's words to help find the simple solution. I will try to get it downloaded at the coffee shop later, see if I have any luck. As I said, I am just tired of the Midi sounds, and the ones in the Sibelius 7 library are ok, but I am writing indoor drumline shows, so I want to have something better sounding to use when pitching them.

P.S. Big fan of the Scheherazade show from 2004. One of my top 5 for sure.

Hi Austin,

I'm not really sure how Windows Defender works, but I wonder if you deactivated it temporarily (while you download) if it would help alleviate the error you were receiving. Maybe not, but perhaps something to try.

It's a pretty big download, so if you end up going the coffee shop route, hopefully they have a fast connection, or you're ready to drink a lot of coffee while you wait. You may need to go decaf...

Thanks for the compliments on the SCV show. Much appreciated!

Jim,

It was indeed the schools firewall. I downloaded connect.exe no problem at the coffee shop. Now I am indeed sitting and waiting for all of VDL to download. Chose cider and oatmeal instead of coffee, since this is Wisconsin and it is very cold today. Big surprise...

Have you ever had any problems with VDL playing nice with Sibelius? I just bought the academic version 7.5.1

Thanks,
Austin

Great to hear you've located the source of the error. And that it's resulted in cider and oatmeal. That sounds like a delicious problem to have, actually. :)

VDL plays very nicely with Sibelius 7.5.1, though I'd highly recommend you invest in a template from The Write Score. Doing so (and thoroughly reading the documentation) should arm you with the most solid method of incorporating the library into Sibelius's method of percussion mapping.
Jim,

Thanks for the advice, I will look into that. If I can ever get VDL going. Now I am having trouble with the installer itself. I haven't had time to get all of it downloaded in 1 sitting, but every time I continue the download and install, it seems to download everything over again, even though it says that everything is downloaded and installed. HELP? Is this just something that I need to suck it up and get some internet at home to let the thing do its work all in one session?

Thanks,
Austin
Hi Austin,

Doing a large download like this on a slow internet connection is a pain - no doubt about that!

I checked your Connect logs, and it looks like part4.rar wasn't completely downloaded (it shows as 27% complete). If the Connect installer is working correctly, it should pick up from where it left off during your last session. Are you seeing different results?

If you don't have access to fast internet without a firewall, you could always opt for a physical disk instead. You already have a serial, but the ";replacement disk"; option might save you some hassle.

Jim,

It seems like I have downloaded all the parts a couple of times. It got to 100% an hour ago, but then started downloading it again. It also says that the Installer is ";Installed"; but everything else is just downloaded. I may just do the backup disc and do it that way, if there is nothing else you can think of. Is it just like installing it from a hard disc?

Thanks,
Austin.
Once the Connect installer has fully downloaded all 5 RAR files (I'm currently seeing part4.rar is at 48%) it will go through the process of assembling them, after which they'd each be assigned the ";installed"; status.

Keep in mind, all this means is that at the end of the process you'll have one full/complete folder called ";Virtual Drumline"; which contains a ";Start Here"; file along with your actual ";Virtual Drumline 2.5"; library folder. The latter is the one you'd want to place somewhere on your hard drive where it will live permanently. Once you've done that, you'd install Kontakt, then click the ";add library"; button in Kontakt and tell it where to locate your ";Virtual Drumline 2.5"; library folder.

If you were to pick up the DVD version as a replacement, you'd essentially just drag this folder from the DVD onto your computer and to the same installation process I described above.

From what I can tell, you may just have to be a little more patient while part4.rar completes downloading. Once that's done, I presume the Connect installer should finish the assembly process for you.

Sorry this has become an inconvenience for you. These days, I guess a lot of us take zippy fast internet for granted! Sounds like you're close though, so I'd just say hang in there!
Jim,

Ok, I got the rest of part 4 downloaded, and it started saying there was an error with part 2 as it started to install. Sigh. Then started to just download part 4 again.

Dang. Sorry to hear it, Austin.

Download errors when transmitting this much data are actually quite common. It's one of the reasons the Connect installer is supposed to be more helpful than just trying to download a bunch of files by themselves and hoping for the best. If errors occur, or little bits of data aren't accounted for, it's supposed to go back after and reattempt those without losing the good bits of data that were previously downloaded.

I'm not sure what to tell you other than to be as patient as possible. Or if you simply don't have access to a solid/fast connection or would rather not hassle with trying to work around it on the slow connection, to order the DVD replacement and do it that way. Sorry for the inconvenience. This process is normally pretty straightforward!
Jim,

I hear you. I think it might just have to be a patience thing. I am having internet installed at home on friday, so that might be the solution. The error seems to keep being part4, and it always seems to go back and just download the entire file instead of the good bits, as you mentioned. But, as I said, I might have to just sit on my sticks until friday, when I will have nice (up to) 20 mb/s speed right at home. Until then...the stock sibelius 7 library marching sounds will do.

Thanks for all the help! It has been great, and nice to get real responses that aren't taken from a set response sheet. i/e ";This is Josh from #%@#%@*& tech support. I would like to assist you with your inquiry."; Sounds like a recording...but anyway...I digress.

Thanks again, I will let you know if there are any other issues, or if I finally get to box 5 with this whole ordeal, and can get more work done on my crazy indoor show concept.

Austin
I hope the new internet connection helps the Connect installer sort everything out for you. You've definitely earned some peace of mind after that ordeal! If you find yourself stuck, please be sure to let us know and we'll figure something out for you!
